Colin
The hype has been around for a while but I have finally caught up with the dvd of Colin - the zombie movie allegedly made for £45. Colin has two major claims to fame. The first, as I stated is that it was made for only £45. I think this may have been a bit of a stretch. Even if everybody involved game their time for free and you dont count the cost of the camera, editing equipment or any other factors which would cost money if you had to buy from scratch, £45 is still a little hard to believe. I dont mean that to be a criticism of the film - its very good - I just doubt the figure they claim as total costs. The fact is that if they spent £4,500 making this film that would still be a massive achievement as it really does hold its own as a feature film and the makers should be proud of it whatever the costs. The second claim to fame for Colin is probably more interesting. It has been proclaimed as the first film told from the zombie perspective. On a technicality, "I, Zombie" was a film which did this some years before but that had a very different premise as it featured an articulate man who had been infected slowly deterioration into zombie-ness. Colin by Comparison takes a man who rapidly descends into Romero style zombie-ness, and then continues his story. As far as I know it is the first film to do this and it does it very well. The fact is this home-made film is really very good. It has a tight story and characters you empathise with and there is a good proportion of Hollywood output that cant boast that. This week I have been mostly reading: The Samurai Film by Alain Silver Current Music: Spinal Tap - Break Like The Wind |

My Current Oscar Predictions After the hectic week of Critic’s Awards, SAG and Golden Globe nominations, the dust has settled and here are my current predictions for the top 6 categories (I usually wait for the WGA to announce nominations before I start speculating on the Screenplay nods, as they are more based on talent/quality and less on hype, so they’ll come later). Picture Avatar Fantastic Mr. Fox (500) Days of Summer The Hurt Locker Inglourious Basterds Nine Precious A Serious Man Up Up In the Air If there were still only five spots, I’d be putting Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Up and Up In the Air in those spots. The other five are the precarious ones, but they’re as good as any for now. Sitting on the outskirts are An Education and Invictus, but I suspect that the support for these two is waning. I’m with Tom O’Neil from The Envelope in predicting a win for Inglourious Basterds. Director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) Clint Eastwood (Invictus) Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are) Jason Reitman (Up In the Air) Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds) The out-there precarious pick is Jonze. Clint Eastwood is also shaky, but I’m still picking those two over James Cameron and Lee Daniels for now. At this stage, I’d go Tarantino for the win. Actor Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) George Clooney (Up In the Air) Colin Firth (A Single Man) Morgan Freeman (Invictus) Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) This seems the most solid line-up for me out of all the categories, although Matt Damon and Viggo Mortensen are lurking just outside. A career win for Bridges is my current prediction. Actress Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) Carey Mulligan (An Education) Maya Rudolph (Away We Go) Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) Meryl Streep (Julie and Julia) Most people are putting Sandra Bullock and Helen Mirren in the places I have for Laurent and Rudolph, but I think the support for IB is strong enough to get Laurent in, and I so want to get Rudolph there that I’ve convinced myself she can make it. We’ll see (this category has offered up surprises this decade, like Laura Linney and Keisha Castle-Hughes). Streep for the win. Supporting Actor Peter Capaldi (In the Loop) Woody Harrelson (The Messenger) Christian McKay (Me and Orson Welles) Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) Waltz and Harrison are the only secure bets here for me, and Anthony Mackie, Alfred Molina and Christopher Plummer are waiting in the wings. But I’m sticking to my guns for now. Waltz is the clear frontrunner here, but I say don’t discount Harrelson as he’s had a good year. Supporting Actress Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air) Anna Kendrick (Up In the Air) Mo’Nique (Precious) Julianne Moore (A Single Man) Samantha Morton (The Messenger) I’m not convinced of the support for Nine just yet (I only begrudgingly put it in The Messenger’s Best Picture place just this morning), so I’ve got Morton in Penelope Cruz’s spot for now. If Mo’Nique continues to snub the Oscar campaign trail, I’m giving the win to either Morton or Moore. |

a little help buffs! i saw UP IN THE AIR earlier today kids, and i've gotta be honest here. it was a good movie, but nowhere near my expectations! i felt compelled to see it because both critics and viewers alike were giving it such good reviews. but it wasn't as entertaining as i'd hoped. like i said, it was fine, but i would have rather waited to watch it on hbo/showtime.
i feel like i'm on crazy pills! is it just me???
p.s. The Men Who Stare at Goats was also a disappointment. maybe i'm having a bad Clooney year :/ |

[211]: "Strangers" Title: Strangers Challenge: [211] Apology (submission 2) Characters: Sora, Roxas Word Count: 260 This is meant to fit a similar theme as "Not Enough." I've seen the possibility of Sora and Roxas not "integrating" played with before, mostly in sporkings of all things. But I wanted to actually seriously examine the idea. This provides an idea of what I'm trying to portray, but I by no means claim to accurately represent those situations. ( see what I see ) |

FEAR in Review
Hey guys! I saw this on FEARnet.com and wanted to share. Every movie site has their top 10 list for 2009, but FEARnet has their list of top HORROR movies of 2009, which I thought was pretty awesome. All week they're going to be putting out more lists, like best horror TV moments of '09, horror surprises of '09, and horror-movies-that-haven't-even-been-rel eased-yet of '09. And without further ado... FEARnet's Top 9 Horror Movies of '09 |

"Boy Abducts Girl" Recs?
As much as as I hate to use the term, I guess there's not really another I can use here. I'm basically looking for Stockholm Syndrome-type films. Namely like The Big Hit (1998) and The Chase (1994) where "boy abducts girl" and it all sort of goes from there into an almost sort of modern-day fairy tale (taking the girl away from the life she hates despite the man being "the villain" and the implication they live happily ever after). I'm good with pretty much any genre and year as long as it fits into this category. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out. :) |

Crap Movie of 2009 #12: BRIGHT STAR I don’t know what it is about me and Jane Campion movies, but I generally dislike them. Apart from An Angel at My Table and Portrait of a Lady – for some reason they were fine. But the others – The Piano was one of the most over-rated movies ever, it was such a non-eventful bore, and both Holy Smoke and In the Cut deserve much scorn. Actually, I do know one of the things that grate me about Campion movies, which features prominently in the last three mentioned – their central premise/message seems to be “Women can’t get ahead in the world without using their sexuality”. (And before anyone starts throwing misogynistic labels at me, one of my friends, who is an ardent feminist and we disagree on many things, totally agrees with me on this one.) Bright Star doesn’t fall into that category, but it’s still a bore. I get sucked into seeing her new film every time (at least this time I had a free pass, so no money was spent), and every time in the last ten years I’ve been disappointed. Sure, Abbie Cornish does well, but if you want to see her best performance, try and track down (for those outside of Australia – for us it’s easy to find) Somersault (it also has a fantastic performance from man-of-the-moment Sam Worthington) - if you can’t track that one down, Candy might be easier to find, since it stars Heath Ledger. The rest of the film? – well, Ben Whishaw makes you wonder how anyone could fall in love with his character, poetry or no poetry, and the storyline, which could be written on a post-it note, is unbearably stretched out for 120 minutes. So my advice is to avoid this (unless you’re a middle-aged middle-class woman, in which case you are apparently the main audience group that appreciates Campion movies, but chances are you’ve only seen The Piano, so I encourage you to try and endure both Holy Smoke and In The Cut and then we’ll see if we can find some common ground.) (Other crap movies of 2009: At Any Second, Coco Avant Chanel, Confessions of A Shopaholic, G-Force, Intangible Asset No. 82, My Life in Ruins, A Pain In The Ass, Stone Bros., The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Ugly Truth, Zack And Miri Make A Porno) |

Crap Emo Movie: THE CHUMSCRUBBER
Yeah, yeah, we get it. Kids from upper-middle class families in America feel all neglected and stuff, as their parents are too self-absorbed, so they turn into emos or violent little shits. It’s been done before, so at least you could give us a believable script, or some characters that develop a little bit of sympathy from the audience. Even good actors like Glenn Close and Ralph Fiennes can’t save this turkey. Skip it, go back and re-watch Donnie Darko instead.

Great Movie of 2009 #12: TWO LOVERS On the surface, this is a pretty straight-forward story about love. Lonely man loses fiancé, meets nice girl, meets another girl he is more infatuated with, and saying any more will count as spoilers. The brilliance that makes this film stand out is in the direction. I can’t remember if I’ve seen James Gray’s The Yards but I definitely saw We Own the Night last year and was suitably impressed (the car chase scene shot entirely from within the car was a highlight). This film confirms him as one of America’s up-and-coming greats. So many of the scenes are framed and shot beautifully, as if Gray ha studied the great films of the 70s and learnt well. The dialogue has that gritty realism about it that never makes you question whether these characters are true. And Gray has managed to get the actors to completely fulfill their individual character’s purpose, both the two leads in carrying the story and the supporting cast who represent the many personality ticks of the central couple. Joaquin Phoenix (a Gray regular) is amazing as Leonard, and Gwyneth Paltrow makes the most of a role that was written particularly with her in mind. This will be on DVD in Australia in the next couple of weeks, and I suspect it may already be widely available elsewhere. I recommend it highly. (Other great movies of 2009: Away We Go, Blessed, Elegy, (500) Days Of Summer, The Informant!, In The City Of Sylvia, JCVD, Lake Mungo, Revolutionary Road, Tenderness, The Wrestler) Oscar Watch: Despite giving a great performance, Phoenix’s recent oddball behaviour hasn’t put him in favour with most of Hollywood (see Ben Stiller’s hilarious piss-take of him at this year’s Oscars for proof), so he won’t be in the running. However, Paltrow is a remote outside chance of getting a nom (very unlikely, though). |

Underrated Movies of the Decade
What movies would you say haven't got the recognition, credit or love they deserve this decade? There are a few Independent or Foreign Language films that I've seen, but which haven't been seen by many people and therefore haven't got much recognition. But that's the nature of the beast, so there is no real expectation for them to be appreciated by a wider audience or by the entertainment media in general (Battle in Heaven, Into the Wild, Let the Right One In, In Search of a Midnight Kiss, Junebug, Control). Therefore, they can't really be "underrated". So, in terms of mainstream movies, there are two that come immediately to mind (and probably many more after I've given it some thought). Firstly, I thought Michael Mann's Miami Vice was an exceptional piece of cinema. For me, it really tapped into some subtle themes and musings of and on masculinity, like a lot of Mann's movies in fact. I accept that structurally it was a flawed movie; in that, the transition between the middle and final act was quite jarring. But in general, I thought it was a really slick, stylish and visceral piece with interesting themes and performances. I know that its slightly obnoxious and patronising to say this, but I can't shake the feeling that a lot of people just don't "get" Miami Vice. . The second underrated mainstream movie that comes to mind for me, would be Terminator Salvation. Its important to categorize exactly what this movie is and who it is for. A movie like this really isn't made for the artsy critics or cinephiles, its more for the casual Saturday afternoon cinema punters. So I'm not surprised by the lack of recognition from those first groups, but more so by the relatively modest box office performance (please correct me if I'm wrong). From my personal perspective, I would say that there was a slew of Action/Science Fiction movies that played a significant part in me becoming a big fan of cinema in general. So I do have a soft spot for these movies, despite their obvious limitations. I accept that some of the writing (particularly the dialogue) in Salvation was flimsy. But as a genre piece, this movie worked because it ticked all the boxes, and everything was well realised and choreographed. There was invention and ideas in the execution of the plot. The characters were archetypal but stayed on the right side of cliche. And the action was well paced, and managed to admirably strike a satisfying balance between visual effects and stunt work. I found this to be a really entertaining movie, it met all my expectations and I'm surprised more people didn't enjoy it as much as I did. . |

VINCERE
Have any of you seen Vincere? I had a couple of misgivings about the movie but it had its definite strengths, such as its beautiful cinematography and the fantastic performance by its lead actress, Giovanna Mezzogiorno. Whatever I might have found lacking in it when I saw it a few months ago I really expected it to show up all over the place around awards season. At least for Mezzogiorno's performance. It's really stayed with me over the past couple of months and I'm surprised that it seems to have fallen off the radar. Opinions? Thoughts? |
